As homeowners, there are multiple chores that require our attention regularly. Your weekends may be filled up by mowing the grass and weeding the garden but is there something important that you are missing? One major task is maintaining your gutters. This can certainly be one of those out-of-sight-out-of-mind tasks. They may not be as glaring as that overgrown flower garden that you cannot seem to keep upon. Gutters that are not maintained and regularly cleaned can cause serious issues in and around your home. Though they may not be top of mind, it may be worth setting a reminder on your phone to ensure this does not go unnoticed.
Clogs are never a good thing
Having clogged gutters can result in damage to your roof, driveway, landscaping and so much more. If your gutters are clogged and you have a buildup of water, they can run down the side of your house and end up in your basement. In the same way that water can enter your basement, water can reach the sand or clay under your foundation and cause buckling, shifting and cracking. In addition to water causing these issues with your foundation, the same issue can arise with your driveway. Not only is the water potentially damaging structurally but it can also be a breeding ground for insects and rodents.
Preventing the problem
So, you may be wondering how you can avoid these issues. The first thing may seem obvious, but you need to check your gutters regularly. If you come across any leaves or other debris, you should remove it immediately. It is also important to secure your gutters should they become loose. If there are still spikes remaining you can re-hammer those in. If the spikes are not still intact, you may need to hammer new spikes into existing holes or utilize new holes and new spikes. You will also need to regularly check for leaks. You can do this by running your hose and checking the seams and joints for any leaks. Should you discover a leak, clean the area and apply silicone caulk. A major indicator that you may have an issue is noticing water running from your gutter when it is not raining. Another action you should take regularly is checking the water runoff. You want to ensure the water coming from the water downspouts is completely diverted away from your house. You can achieve this by using splash blocks, a downspout extension or an irrigation pipe. Using tools like a power washer or a gutter scoop may help expedite the process.
Prevention is key when it comes to gutter maintenance. Utilizing gutter screens help prevent debris from entering the gutter. There are also guards available that may come at a higher price tag but may be worth the investment. Even if you utilize tools to protect your gutters, it is still a great practice to inspect your gutters regularly.
